Eco-resort in the Caribbean: Mosquito Island

Richard Branson, the adventuring chairman of the Virgin Group of companies, has plans for his newest property, Mosquito Island, to be transformed into what he touts as the most environmentally-friendly resort on the globe. He envisions 20 villas and a beachfront restaurant powered entirely by wind turbines and solar panels. The eco-resort's buildings would capture cool thermal airflows, eliminating the need for air conditioners. The guests' food would come from an organic orchard, and beach buggies would be powered by bio-fuels. Branson believes soaring global oil prices can be the catalyst to spur governments worldwide to develop their own eco-projects.

Azamara Navigates Near Main Cities in Thailand and Vietnam

--Azamara Cruises has modified its 2008-09 itineraries in order to navigate ships closer to main cities in Thailand and Vietnam. To do so, Azamara will utilize docks that can accommodate smaller ships. The 694-passenger Azamara Quest, which begins sailing in Asia in December, originally was going to implement the changes with is 2009-10 Asia season but was able to make them sooner, the line said. In Bangkok, the Quest will dock at Klong Toey Port, located on the Chao Phraya River, typically less than 30 minutes from the city center. In Ho Chi Minh City, the Quest will dock at Saigon Port, approximately three miles from the city center. The Quest will sail up the Song River, offering scenic views along the way. Larger ships must dock or tender two-and-a-half hours away at the Vung Tau anchorage or dock at Phu My Port, the line said. (www.TravelWeekly.com, 7/3)
